Samurai

by Tatu

The historical figure known as Samurai, stirs all kinds of imagery in our minds. They were warriors, yet not just men of war. For the most part they were protectors. They served local daimyo. Daimyo were the provincial rulers serving under the Shogun.  To say Samurai were simply warriors or protectors, however, would be a hugh misconception. They were also statesmen.

The Samurai in fact were a "social class" created during the 250 years of peace in Japan referred to as the Edo Period. There were four classes during the Edo period. There other three classes were artisans, peasants, and merchants.  The Samurai class was formally outlawed in Japan with the end of the Edo Period and the restoration of the Emperor to power in what is called the "Meiji Restoration" of 1867. Specifically there were two edicts issued at that time:

The "Class Abolishment Act "which ended the class system in Japan, including the Samurai Class.

The "Sword Abolishment Act "which made it illegal to wear a sword in public.

So in reality there are no more Samurai. There are those in modern society who do, however have a historical respect for these protectors in society and see importance in the 7 codes of bushido as something of a moral and ethical guides in life.

Some Martial Artists today hold great respect for the spirit of Samurai and follow a way similar to the 7 codes of Bushido.

Some close protection agents, secret service agents, and other bodyguards compare their role to that of the Samurai, seeing themselves as "protectors".  Just as a Samurai protected his daimyo, the close protection agent protects his principal, the secret service agent protects his president and is willing to fight to the death if necessary.

Some  Dominants in the D/s world see themselves as protectors of their submissive charges. So perhaps here today we propose a new model for the Dominant in the world of D/s. One in which those of us who live our D/s in an Eastern School fashion find meaning and inspiration.

Regardless, the principals of bushido are worth our study as they provide guides to the Dominant for living life with integrity.
