Just Some Views... by Tatu
Disclaimer: This newsletter is just a collection
of my ramblings. It is not intended to be authoritative in any way. Just
reflections of my personal explorations. If anyone finds it interesting or
helpful for me that is a plus. I don't know it all and stay far
away from the elitists who think they do. I am no Master of anything,
just a student on a journey who loves to explore life, art, relationships
and hopefully will one day learn to at least be the Master my own soul and
the loving leader of another self empowered one who wishes to walk along
side me.
BMSL
Greetings everyone! Just returned from a wonderful weekend at BMSL
X (Beat Me in St Louis - #10). Got to cross paths with the beautiful
shevah, and we shared one class together, "The Way of Rope". Had a wonderful
weekend with all these wonderful folks as always. This event is well organized
and is just fun. There is a wonderful positive energy there. I would
like to say thank you again to Larry and his team. You did a great job!
I would like to also thank the guys at "Erotic Hemp" for providing me with
one of my demo models for the Japanese Chest Harness class. Her name is
"francene", rope slut to Michael Kellar. She has the most beautiful
light chocolate skin and the rope was just gorgeous encasing her chest. She
is the one who is finishing the hemp for Erotic Hemp. So I got to tie
her in her own ropes that she had made for me... she seemed to enjoy it.
Smile.
I am pleased to announce that they are producing their wonderful hemp in
red and black which will be available for Shibaricon. Their hemp rope is
absolutely wonderul and comes either whipped or with stopper knots.
Also as a part of the weekend, I was honored to give a beautiful slave, "passion
spirit" her first flight. I met her and her Master a few events ago and was
approached later about having a ritual rope encounter, and taking her on
a journey. They both are relatively new to the scene and are very happy
campers as they explore the world of erotic power exchange together. On Saturday
night we came together and her Sir, removed her lovely asian attire and ritually
presented her to me for the scene. Shevah was a wonderful part of this
encounter as well.
We got to see old friends and also meet Lqqout and Gen from the ARA list..
what a beautiful energy this young couple have. Also relatively new to the
rope scene and are in hog-tied heaven. It is just fun to watch people having
fun.. and they were non-stop.
SHIBARICON - May 26-29
Well Shibaricon approaches..... just a few weeks.... I will be
teaching three classes.
One on Japanese Chest Harnesses. We will cover three ways
to beautifully encase the female chest using traditional kinbaku styles.
We will give attention to various safety issues concening nerve compression
and appropriate usage for suspensions.
The second class will be on Japanese styled bondage ties and crotch harnesses
for sex.... wonderful ways we can gain access using rope for mutual pleasure.
The third will be my "Way of Rope" course with subshevah. Discussion
will be on employing ritual, cultural and energetic aspects into your
rope scene. Sights, sounds, smells all go into the rope moment so that the
fullness of energy may be enjoyed by both partners as well as observers.
The class will end with a ritual rope scene for the group to experience first
hand what we discussed.
There will be numerous skilled rope practioners from around the world teaching
many courses from the basics to advanced suspensions. There will be specific
courses taught from the rope bottoms point of view by subshevah and Lady
Gold.
There is still time to register. This is our rope homecoming each year and
it is such a joy to meet so many rope lovers. Below are some links with
information.
If you are reading this .....PLEASE COME.
Mademoiselle B
I met this young lady at a conference a few months back. I watched her do
her self bondage in
the play space from a hogtie to a full suspension. She was
amazing to watch. Then later I find her tying up little "michiko" and torturing
her with rope and a nose hook. So impressed, I attended her class the
next day even though I personally have no interest in self-bondage. I hate
being tied up. I did it once in 1998, when two lovlies convinced me it would
be fun... I hated every minute of it. I couldn't deal with the loss of control
issue... lol, go figure.
Mademoiselle B is bright and articulate with a responsible focus on safety
for this edgeplay. She will be with our Shibari South Florida group on May
20th in Ft Lauderdale. Details below.
This is going to be a very well attended event. We are going to have
a number of people with us from another support group, the "Florida Alt"
group. I will be meeting with them at 5pm for a basic Japanese Bondage class
and then they will stay with us for Mademoiselle B's self-bondage presentation.
We are going to max out our space. So make your plans to attend now!!!

Japanese Terms - Japanese Rope
by Tatu
If interested in Japanese Rope, one naturally becomes exposed to some Japanese
words along the way. Most westerners know a few simple words or phrases like
"konnichi-wa" for "hello" and "domo arigato" for "thank you very much". Yet
when we dig into the world of kinbaku, we learn of words or phrases to describe
certain forms, like the historic "ebi" for shrimp tie, a position used for
torture during the Edo period, or "ushiro takate kote" which denotes a classic
tie with the arms in the u-shape behind the back, foundational to many other
classic forms.
It was in the 1970's when I saw my first images of Japanese Rope. These magazines
where in Japanese so I had no clue as to what these ties were called. I simply
appreciated the artistic way in which they were done. This was in contrast
to the more violent way western bondage was portrayed in the classic cult
magazines. Although I have an appreciation for western, back then I did not
enjoy the theme of non-consensuality that was often portrayed. I can separate
it better into fantasy role play now and do enjoy the captive aspects of
western.
The first term I ever heard related to the use of rope by the Japanese was
"hojo-jitsu", which
was
from Don Angier's VHS tapes which he produced in 1998 & 1990 demonstrating
the martial art of Japanese Prisoner restraint using rope.
"Don Angier sensei is the Soke, inheritor by direct succession of a classical
ryuha, of Yanagi ryu Aiki Bugei of the Yoshida han. Angier sensei was bequeathed
Yanagi ryu by Yoshida Kenji sensei the son of the famous Yoshida Kotaro.
The fact that an ancient samurai ryuha has been inherited by a hakujin is
unique. Angier sensei is one of the foremost teachers and practitioners of
ancient samurai arts in the world."
You can read Angier Sensei's complete profile at:
http://www.bugei.com/angier.html
You can order his Hojo-jitsu VHS tapes as well as other martial arts
instructional videos at the same site at:
http://bugei.com/subcategory_46.htm
Volume 1 is out of print, but I understand both volumes are coming
in DVD format soon. I also enjoyed the Tanto jitsu video on short knife
handling and defense.
While in the 80's I simply enjoyed bedroom bondage for fun and simply appreciated
the Japanese style , it wasn't until the early 90's that I became very interested
in studying Japanese style rope as a binding art for my own fun and pleasure.
I had joined a Japanese Cultural center called Morikami Museum and Gardens
in the late 80s and it was a time shortly after that, when my appreciation
for Japanese Culture led me to want to do Japanese Rope for myself. A
friend of mine had bought the book "Screw The Roses"
in which was illustrated a "karada", but it was not called that. It
was called an "Oriental Rope Dress". Even the authors, Phillip
Miller and Molly Devon had a cursury knowlege or the art and obviously
did not know what it was they were illustrating. They were giving the
BDSM world it's first over all primer in many things.
When the Internet arrived in full bloom in the early to mid 90's, I
started coming across a few terms for what was being represented as authentic
Japanese ties. Understand I am a researcher by nature. When I start studying
something, I dig and dig and dig. I ask alot of questions, like: Where did
you get that? or What is your source on that? etc.... Since there was
very little on the Internet about BDSM at the time and my knowledge
was limited, I affectionaltely regarded my websites as research projects
and indeed a continuous work in progress.
I am of nature what is called a "critical thinker". To clarify, that doesn't
mean I like to criticize things, it means I like to approach things with
a healthy skepticism. I like to break things down and examine all the parts;
putting them back together again, so I can truly understand all that I can
about what it is I am studying. This is something that I have gained alot
of appreciation for as the world of the Internet has given rise to much mythology
when it comes to Japanese Bondage.
When you study Japanese terms you will find a very interesting thing. The
Japanese have appropriated many American or "Engrish" terms for
their modern usage. For example "gay bar" in Japanese is "gei ba".
Most interesting for me to find was that the term most common for Japanese
Rope in use today is the American (or Engrish) word "bondage" ! Terms
like "shibari" or "kinbaku" are not all that very well known among the Japanese
nationals themselves. What I found is that "shibari" or "shibaru" is
actually a common term in use in the "fabric weaving" industry. My contacts
with Japanese nations indicates that "kinbaku" is actually a more commonly
understood term in Japan for rope binding for erotic purposes rather than
shibari which is simply understood in everday vernacular as a verb meaning
"to tie" and would first be associated with something to do with
fabric. The word "kikkou" which means "tortoise" is in fact a historic and
very popular design in the fabric industry. The historic "hon kikkou" tie
is taken from this six sided design that the rope makes when applied to the
body in a certain manner.
Kinbaku has it origins in the late 1800's about the time Hojo jutsu was outlawed.
By the way, Hojo jutsu or Hojo jitsu are both acceptable ways to spell the
word for this martial art. Shibari seems to have its origin of being applied
to the art of Japanese Bondage sometime around the 1950's with the rise of
the professional Japanese porn & bondage performance riggers.
In the mid 1990's I then found some videos and publications by Randa Mai
and the subscription website called "Kikkou.com" out of Japan. With these
a number of terms cropped up to describe the art. My thirst for knowledge
and understanding was now in high gear.
Then in the late 1990's I started seeing a few new terms cropping up to describe
certain Japanese styled rope ties. Among them were:
"Shinju" - which in Japanese means "pearls"
and euphimisically refers to the breast or nipples.
"Sakuranbo" - literally means "cherry" and refers
to the female vagina area.
"Kotori" - means "little bird", used to refer
to the act of rope suspension.
I first saw the word "shinju" used on the late Tammad Ramilia's website about
1998. Others would later use this and other terms mentioned on a few
websites that started popping up about the same time. Unfortunately Tammad
died in a car accident on Monday Nov 20, 2000, so we can't ask him where
he got these terms. You can still see his site at:
http://ms.ha.md.us/~tammad/over21/bondage/
It appears that Tammad most likely got this term from a commercial European
subscription website, owned by certain notorious webmaster. This webmaster
is a very controversial figure in the Japanese Rope world. I met him once
and saw him do rope twice. Both times I saw him do rope in Florida was around
2000 / 2001. On both ocassions he used techniques that resulted in his
demo model in distress and the presentation had to be cut short. It was obvious
that he didn't know what he was doing. He could talk a good talk, but
was not very good in doing what he was talking about. I have observed
him in a number of online e-groups over the years, of which he has been banned
primarily for his arrogant demeanor. He is one of those people who can't
stop telling everyone how great he is. I suppose you have them in every
community.
When I was president of our local BDSM support and education group, I once
asked one of our local single tail whip guys that if we brought in a single
tail presenter for one of our meetings that year, of anyone in the world
who would he recommend. God's honest truth, he was such a self absorbed,
narcissistic personality, he could only suggest himself, because there was
no one better in the world than he was. I finally just walked away from the
conversation.
For years this same European webmaster also claimed to have been trained
by an authentic "Shibari Master" in Japan. My research indicates that
he may have been in Japan for a while and came across rope bondage there,
but when pressed he admitted that his supposed shibari sensei was in reality
a shiatsu massage practioner, not in fact a rope master at all. Hence this
is where the concept of combining Japanese rope and pressure points probably
had it's origin in the west, as to my knowledge today's actual Japanese Rope
Masters know nothing of this concept.
My research went on to indicate that this Webmaster claims to be the originator
of the terms "shinju", "sakuranbo" and "kotori". He featured them at one
time on his commercial website and in fact may still do so.
An interesting development in my digging for the truth was that back in the
early 90's there was a big online News Group debate between this man
and another and European Webmaster who also claimed to be the originator
of these same terms !
After many hours of study and digging, there is one thing for certain; they
are most likely sourced out of Europe and of the prominent rope practioners
in Japan today, the terms are completely foreign to them. They seemed to
have come from one of these two competing webmasters, and not Japan.
This is unfortunate to those of us who are truly trying to learn as it has
led to alot of confusion and mis-information.
That understood, they are still nice euphemistic terms, but not authentic
to the art of Kinbaku / Shibari.
There are many terms given in my Glossary at the website which I have put
together over the years. Recently I have been attempting to share more
information relative to the origin of these terms and not simply define them.
http://www.ds-arts.com/RopeArt/Terms.html
Again it is a work in progress, a learning project for me. I
hope you find it helpful. Hope you enjoy.

ADULT ROPE ART - What is it?
Adult Rope ARt or ARA for short was founded in 2001
as a way for rope enthusiasts around the world to come together to share
and learn from each other. It has grown to over 9500 participants from all
over the world and is the largest and most active rope list on the internet.
Members share their ideas, techniques, resources for a safer and pleasurable
rope experience.
The list owner is Tatu, and is co-moderated by Locahi

About our guest presenter: "Mademoiselle B"
from Chicago

Mademoiselle B was entangled in her umbilical cord in the womb, and
thus began her love of bondage. Unfortunately, she forgot all about it at
birth, and didnt really remember until a few years ago but
shes made up for lost time.
She started out as a bondage bottom in a long-distance relationship, and
since he wasnt around, her boyfriend started tying her up vicariously
with him instructing and her tying and locking herself up. Pretty
soon she developed a taste for it, and started doing it on her own time;
binding and even suspending herself.
Mlle B considers herself a true switch she is now an experienced rope
top as well as a bottom and her self bondage is a way for her to be
both top and bottom simultaneously. She recommends self bondage for both
tops and bottoms; for practice, self-teaching, relaxation, physical challenge,
flexibility training, amusing your partner, and lots more

In 2000, I started something I called "Shibari South Florida". We met
in my home for a while and have met periodically since. Our numbers grew
too large for my residence and so we have now ventured out into renting space
for our workshop and social gatherings. Our next workshop will be Saturday,
February 18, 2006 in Ft Lauderdale, Florida, followed by a social time we
have named "S. I. L. K." which stands for:
"Sensuous

Or,
Sadistic
Intimate Lascivious
Kink, depends on our
mood that night...
And sometimes we even have:

If you live in South Florida, and are interested in rope, please contact
us about future gatherings.
"Erotic Ropes" for your Bondage
D/s ARts & Shibari South Florida has teamed up with Sir Michael of Erotic
Ropes in Chicago to provide a quality hemp rope product to the Florida
Community. Tatu will have 30' & 15' lengths of 6mm finished hemp rope
available at SSF and other South Florida events.
Hemp rope is the traditional material used in shibari; a Japanese form of
rope bondage. It is becoming more and more popular among bondage enthusiasts.
Hemp rope is strict yet soft, it holds knots tighter with less slippage and
it doesn't stretch. Erotic ropes are created from grade Romanian twisted
hemp. Twelve hours of work go into each piece of erotic rope. Each length
of rope is washed and then dried. The rope is then oiled, boiled, dried and
singed to remove stray fibers. This process is repeated three times by a
most loving rope slut so we can offer you the finest quality twisted hemp
for all your bondage perversions.

Commentary: Government Can't Have It Both Ways On 2257
By: Mark Kernes
Posted: 7:55 pm PDT 4-27-2006
IRVINE, Calif. - The Free Speech Coalition's fight against the onerous and
unconstitutional regulations under 18 U.S.C. §2257 got a little easier
Monday as President Bush neatly torpedoed one of the Justice Department's
claims regarding identification documents, and a right-wing legal think tank,
in an ad on the New York Times Op-Ed page, seemed to support getting rid
of the regs altogether.
"Now, the problem we have is you got some person out there in central Texas
needing a worker, and he can't find a worker, an American," President Bush
said in a speech on immigration reform delivered at the Hyatt Regency Irvine
on Monday. "... And so he says, why don't you send somebody over to help
me? And they show up and they put a Social Security card out there and it
looks real. You know, our small business owners are not document checkers.
These are people trying to get ahead, and it's impossible ... to really effect
the enforcement of our laws if people are able to use forged documents."
"Now, we've increased the amount of manpower there to hold people to account
for hiring illegals," the president continued, "but it is difficult to hold
somebody, an employer to account if they're putting false papers on -- the
truth of the matter is, what's happened is people are trying to come in this
country and we got smugglers smuggling them in... These smugglers are coyotes,
they're kind of preying on innocent life, and they've got a whole document
forgery industry going on... That's why I'm for a temporary worker program
... that says to a person, here is a tamper-proof card that says, you can
come and do a job an American won't do, fill a need. A tamper-proof card
all of a sudden makes interior enforcement work. In other words, we now know
who's getting the cards and we know they can't be tampered with. So the guy
says, show me your tamper-proof card before I hire you. And if they do, fine.
But if they don't, say, I'm not hiring you. You got to have the card to get
work." [Emphasis added]
But despite President Bush's recognition that "our small business owners
are not document checkers," the U.S. Department of Justice will hold some
employers to account if it turns out that people they have employed have
used "false papers": The adult industry.
It's well known in the adult industry that the four minors who managed to
pass themselves off as adults over the past 20 years and appear in adult
movies, including the famous Traci Lords, all had presented authentic-looking
forms of identification, including driver's licenses and passports. But if
an adult producer were to accept such false identification and proceed to
use a minor in a sexually explicit production of any sort, that producer
could be prosecuted under both the 2257 regulations and the anti-child
pornography statutes and could be imprisoned for decades all for relying
on documents that President Bush has now said that employers should not be
held accountable for relying on! And since a government-issued "tamper-proof
card" is not currently available, it's difficult to understand how the Justice
Department could prosecute adult industry members for accepting false
identification that the president says every employer including,
implicitly, adult industry employers should get a pass on!
The other bright spot in the news was the Washington Legal Foundation's (WLF)
ad on page A23 of Monday's New York Times. The WLF's mission, according to
its website, is to "commit our resources to working with our friends in
government and our legal system to maintain balance in the Courts and help
our government strengthen America's free enterprise system." In practice,
that means that the foundation files amicus briefs opposing, for instance,
attorneys' fees in citizens' class action lawsuits, and in favor of the courts
"cracking down" on "frivolous" lawsuits filed by individual plaintiffs against
multinational corporations.
Titled, "Amnesty for Honest Businessmen," WLF's ad was part of its continuing
series, "In All Fairness," and this time, the foundation was concerned that
the federal government seemed to be favoring the rights of illegal immigrants
over the rights of legitimate businesses.
"Honest business owners and employees face a network of government prosecutors
and bureaucrats who draft, interpret, and enforce mind-numbingly complex
rules," the ad's second paragraph begins. "This drastic expansion of federal
control over our lives has spawned over 11,000 regulations that can be criminally
enforced against any legitimate commercial activity. On top of that, add
the laws and regulations of 50 states, plus countless plaintiffs' lawyers
eager to pile on with multi-million dollar lawsuits."
"Many regulations are so confusing that they can turn any honest business
person into a criminal even without a prosecutor having to show any criminal
intent," the ad continues. "Any misstep, even as innocuous as failing to
file the required paperwork, can have ruinous consequences. Rather than assist
American businesses that must navigate this imposing gauntlet, unelected
regulators now all too often play an arbitrary game of 'gotcha,' turning
to criminal prosecution for minor regulatory infractions instead of using
far more appropriate administrative or civil remedies." [Emphasis added]
Any of that sound familiar? Any of that sound un-American? The Washington
Legal Foundation (www.wlf.org) obviously thinks so.
At the very least, the ongoing litigation in Free Speech Coalition v. Gonzales
has shown that the 2257 regulations are "so confusing that they can turn
any honest business person into a criminal even without a prosecutor having
to show any criminal intent" such as when an adult producer accepts
a minor's fraudulent identification and uses that person in a sexually explicit
production and the Justice Department has held firm on positions under
its 2257 regs, the inevitable result of which would be that "[a]ny misstep
[by an adult producer], even as innocuous as failing to file the required
[2257] paperwork, can have ruinous consequences" like five years in
prison and thousands of dollars in fines for a first conviction.
First Amendment litigation is always interesting but it's even moreso
when your opponents, including the president of the United States, freely
(and no doubt unwittingly) provide ammunition that helps you win your case.
Maybe Free Speech Coalition should ask the Washington Legal Foundation to
file an amicus brief on the industry's behalf?

BDSM can be dangerous.. on the job
FRESNO, California (Reuters) - A California woman who sued her former employer
after she was spanked on the job was awarded $1.7 million (930 million pounds)
in damages and compensation on Friday. ..
Janet Orlando, 53, said she was embarrassed, permanently scarred and mentally
anguished by the fraternity-like atmosphere and sales-building exercises
at Alarm One Inc., which included paddling if an employee was late for a
sales meeting.
The jury initially awarded her $500,000 in compensatory damages for lost
wages, emotional distress and medical expenses. After further deliberation,
the jury added another $1.2 million in punitive damages, lawyers said.
"Nationwide this will make for a safer workplace, help ensure less harassment
in the workplace," Orlando's attorney Nicholas "Butch" Wagner told Reuters.
"The most compelling evidence is that they made a middle-aged woman go in
front of mostly male co-workers between the ages of 18 and 24, bend over,
put her hands on the wall and spanked her with a metal sign."
The swatting incidents occurred in 2003 and stopped as soon as executives
at company headquarters in Anaheim, California, received a complaint, Alarm
One Chief Operating Officer Patrick Smith said.
Sales people at the home security company's Fresno office, which has since
closed, developed the unorthodox practices themselves.
Two original plaintiffs who sued over the practice settled out of court,
defence attorney K. Poncho Baker said.
The company did not return calls seeking reaction after the jury announced
its verdict.

Los Angeles, CA (AHN) A woman who was spanked in front of her co-workers
in what her employer called a camaraderie-building exercise has been awarded
two and a quarter million dollars.
A jury found that 53-year-old Janet Orlando was subjected to sexual harassment
and sexual battery when she was paddled on the bottom two years ago at the
home security company which employed her.
Orlando has been awarded $10,000 for economic loss, $40,000 for future medical
costs and $450,000 for emotional distress, pain and suffering.
She also receives $1.2 million in punitive damages.
